การถ่ายภาพจากกล้องดิจิตอล ยังคงให้ความละเอียดได้ไม่มากนัก สามารถใช้งานได้สะดวก ไม่ต้องเสียเวลาในการสแกนอีก มีสะดวกในการพกพาไปถ่ายภาพเหมือนกล้องถ่ายรูปทั่ว ๆ ไป ทำให้สามารถเลือกถ่ายภาพในสิ่งที่ต้องการได้ตั้งค่าต่างๆในเครื่อง กำหนดเวลาถ่ายภาพอัตโนมัติ เปิดหน้ากล้องตามต้องการ หรืออัตโนมัติ ดูภาพที่ถ่ายแล้ว ลบภาพ ป้องกันมิให้ภาพถูกลบ และโอนย้ายภาพลงเครื่องคอมพิวเตอร์ ฟังก์ชันต่างๆ ดังกล่าว มีให้เลือกได้จากปุ่มควบคุม นอกจากนี้ยังเลือกตั้งค่าต่างๆ ด้วยเมนูจากจอ LCD รวมทั้งเลือกค่าแฟลชได้ รายการอื่น ๆ ก็ขึ้นอยู่กับรุ่นและบริษัทที่ผลิตออกมา การเก็บข้อมูลก็มีทั้งที่ถ่ายเก็บลงแผ่นดิสก์เก็ท 3.5 นิ้ว ส่วนรุ่นใหม่จะมีซิปหน่วยความจำในการเก็บข้อมูล

เมื่อได้ภาพมาแล้วก็สามารถใช้โปรแกรมตกแต่งภาพจำพวกโฟโตชอป (Photoshop) หรือเพนต์ชอปโปร (PaintShop Pro) ก็ได้ จัดการให้ภาพเป็นไปดังที่ต้องการ ให้เหมาะกับการนำไปใช้งาน ส่วนมากก็เป็นรูปภาพนามสกุล PCX,BMP,PSD,TIF,JPG,GIF ส่วนการนำไปใช้ในการสร้างโฮมเพจจะใช้ GIF,JPG เป็นหลัก
