Nakhon Si Thamarat Province


    Nakhon Si Thamarat is an ancient city in Southern Thailand with evidences of civilization in religion, arts and culture. Archaeological objects include stone weapons, indigenous grotto wall painting and one-faced bronze drum confirm the belif that human settlements in this land date back in thousands of years.
    Nakhon Si Thamarat, the secon largest city of the greatest history and background above any other town in the region due to its status as a first grade city controlling various subjected cities and towns, a place that houses Lord Buddha's relics which is a most important statutory place of the South, being the center of Buddhism during Sivichaya period, is located some 861 kilometers by railroad and 780 kilometers by highway from Bangkok. It occupies and area of 9,942.5 square kilometers having high plateau with mountains and jungles in the west then sloping down towards the east and becoming basin along the coastline of the Gulf of Thailand. It borders on Surat Thani to the north; Trang, Phattalung and Songkhla to the south; the Gulf of Thailand to the east; and Krabi to the west.

 


Attractions
Phra Mahathart Jedi, Wat Phra Mahathart
Wat Phra Mahathart - This is originally an old monastery of Nakhon Si Thamarat, situated in the heart of the city. It is believed to be constructed during Sivichaya period in compliance with the idea of Mahayana Buddhism School. An extensive complex is centred on the 77-metre pagoda houses Buddha relics brought from Sri Lanka some 1,700 years ago. Besides, there are a lot of other important archaeological places such as Vihara Luang, Vihara Khien, Vihara Khot, Vihara Pho Lanka, museum, etc.
Old City Wall - It was firtstly constructed during the period of Phraya Si Thamma Sokarat and latter renewed twice during the city. It is believed to be constructed during the periods of King Ramesuan and King Narai the Great of Ayutthaya. The total width is 460meters and 2,230 meters in length.
Chedi Yak - is a giant pagoda located near the Municipality Office. Its size comes secondly to the biggest one at Wat Phra Mahatrat. The pagoda is assumed to be built in 1003 by a Mon millinonnaire and his followers who came to live here.
Giann Swing and Brahman Temple - The location is in the heartof the city on a side of Ratchdamnoen Road. The current structures are the replica of the ones in Bangkok but smaller in size. They are important places of Brahman Religion which was firstly introduced to Nakhon Si Thamarat.
Nakhon Si Thamarat National Museum houses many priceless artifacts, as well as locally produced. Notable artifacts include the kettle drum from the Dong Son culture. Locally produced art includes exquisitely hand-woven bags made from the clinging vine called yan lipao. Such bags were always chosen as gifts for Thai royalty. There is also an unusual collection of folk art including walking stichs, clothing and nielloware.
Hat Khanom - is a located 1.5 kilometers from Amphoe Khanom, approximately 100 kilometers north of the provincial capital, actually comprises 3 sandy beaches : Nai Praet, Nai Phlao and Pak Nam. Accommodation is available.

 

Khao Kha Archaeological Site - is situated on the mountain in Tambon Sao Sao Phao, Amphoe Sichon. It can be accessed by traveling along the Highway no. 401 and turning to Chinda Prachasan Road at Km.99, then driving on for another 5 kilometers. There is an ancient city of over 1,500 years old and fragments of architectural ruins left scattered within the area. The remains of a laterite shrine are found on top of the mountain.

 

Khao Luang National Park covered the area of 570 square kilometers in Amphoe Lan Saka, Amphoe Muang, Amphoe Phrommakhiri, Amphoe Chawang and Amphoe Phipun. Main attractions in the national park area are waterfalls as followed;
Nam Tok Karom - is about 1,300-1,400 height with 19 levels, located in Amphoe Lan Saka by highway 4016, 9 kilometers from the city, turn left to highway 4015 for 15 kilometers then turn right for another 3 kilometers.
Nam Tok Phrommalok - is one of the big and high falls with 3 levels. It can be reached by highway 4016 and turn left at km.21 to highway 4132 for another 5 kilometers.
Nam Tok Ai Khieo or Nai Khieo is located in Tambon Thonhong, Amphoe Phrommakhiri, 29 kilometers further Phrommalok Waterfall
Nam Tok Krung Ching is very big and has many levels. The most beautiful level is called "Nam Fon Saen Ha" which means plenty drops of rain because it looks like rain drops falling down from the cliff. It is located about 70 kilometers from Provincial City on the highway no. 4016, then walk for another 3.8 kilometers. Accommodations and food are available. Other attractions in the national park area are; Nam Tok Tha Pae, Tambon Chang Klang, Amphoe Chawang, Nam Tok Khlong Tha Ngiu, Tambon Khlong Tha Ngiu, Tambon Nop Phi Tam, Amphoe Tha Sala and a cave called, Tham Kaeo Surakan on km. 12 highway No. 4015.
Nam Tok Yong National Park is accessible by traveling on the Highway no. 403 (Nakhon Si Thamarat-Thung Song route). With its area being a virgin forest, there are beautiful waterfalls such as Yong, Nam Pliu, and Khlong Kui. Traveling to Yong Waterfall can be made by car, but the rest only on foot. Accommodation is not available. Tourists have to bring their own tents for an overnight stay.

 

Shopping : Tha Chang the road of Crafts
Originally, shops selling nielloware, silverware and leather goods, in Nakhon Si Thamarat province, were scattered all over on such road as Raj Damnern, Tha Poh, Sri Praj, Bo Ang, Paniad and Tha Chang. Later niello and silversmiths openedup in Bangkok, giving up their businesses in Nakhon Si Thamarat, causing remaining smiths to group together in Tha Chang Road.
These proprietors are Muslims and almost all of the families in this business are related. Niello and silversmiths found today in Tha Chang Road are descendants of people from Sai Buri who have maintained their superb craftsmanship, adapting modern styles to produce pieces demanded by customers.
Old and new shopkeepers have joined together to turn the Tha Chang Road into a road of crafts, cooperating with one another to keep in line with tourism developments. This is the place where tourists can shop for quality products.
The Tha Chang Road stretches less than one kilometre and the section where these shops are located runs for around six-hundred metres close to the Surat Thani Tourism Authority of Thailand office. Shops to look for include Ban Na Bin, Thom Sivijai, Pim Nakhon, Chawee Pitsuwan, Manas Pitsuwan, 12 Naksats, Klang Kruang Pradab (or Jewellery Collection), Sri Nakhon Jewellery and Santipap.

 

Festival and Celebrations in Nakhon Si Thamarat Province

Festival of the tenth Lunar month, The festival falls in September - October every year.
This ceremony is celebrated locally during the fifteen nights of the waning moon period in the tenth lunar month to bring merit to the souls of ancestors. Buddhists offer a variety of foods and other gifts to monks, and there are also numerous cultural performances, exhibitions contests, and other entertainments.
