Phanom Rung Historical Pank
The Phanom Rung Historical Pank in the northeastern part of Thailand has the Khmer-style monument called Prasat Hin Phanom Rung as its main structure. In the northeastern part of Thailand there are many archaeological sites and historical monuments, which testify a long cultural tradition from the Prehistoric times up to the present. The historical monuments are religious structures built in brick or stone found all ober the region, especially concentrated in the central northeast. They were constructed to enshrine objects of worship either in Mahayana Buddhism or Hinduism. Built in strong materials, they retain many evidences of religion and culture, from which we can reconstruct the archaeological and historical evolution of the region.
Prasat Hin Phanom Rung is one of the most ancient monuments in the northest, as well as on of the most beautiful historical sites in Thailand. The monument stands majestically on top of Phanom Rung mountain in Ta Pek sub-district, Nang Rong district, Buriram province. Its main tower surrounded by the enclosure gallery is buitl according to a well developed plan. In fact, in the domain of the ancient Khmer civilization. Prasat Hin Phanom Rung is the only religious monument constructed on a natural mountain. The architect was extremely successful in making the best of the geographical situation. Among those found in Thailand the monument is the largest and the most advanced in the development of Khmer architecture, and also is in the best condition
The monument has a long approach made along the slope of the mountain, which is punctuated by Naga bridges at different levels from one layer to another. At the end of the steep flight of stone steps, one reaches the entrance to the main tower called Gopura made in the middle of the eastern wall of the enclosure gallery.
At the centre of the main tower was the place to put foundation deposits and the main image of worship on top, which had most probably been a Siva Linga or an image of Siva. The line straight from the first approach to the central part of the main tower determines the general lay-out of the buildings in the monument, all which faces east. The alignment of the buildings is absolutely straigt, which is also rarely found among the Khmer-stye monuments in Thailand as well as in Kampuchea.
Now, the historical park at Phanom Rung can serve for educational purposes as well as for tourism. The successful completion of the conservation work satisfies not only the national pride of the Thai people but also for all mankind. The official opening of this great achievement is auspiciously presidrd over by H.R.H. Princess Mahachakri Sirindhorn in April, 1988.
Phanom Rung Historical Parks opens to the public from 08.00 a.m. to 05.00 p.m.. Entrance fee : 20 Baht.
